A change of direction and a sale!
Which way is the wind blowing?
I was flying through sunsets and sunrises with my birds, making colourful arrangements in glass, small pictures and large murals, from 2 dimensions to sculptural 3 dimensions where flying creatures could become more realistic and adorn living room walls.
I loved making them so much. It was a passion, an obsession and a necessity.
From the first ever mosaic on a school wall in 1994 to the last kingfisher in 2024, I loved my work. I also enjoyed teaching many adults and children to make mosaics through the years.
But then the storm came, the wind that turned me around in a whirlwind. I was lost for a while when my mother died in 2023 and I found walking and sketching helped me to focus, and although I was still teaching and making mosaics, that last year was hard. The pieces of glass in my hands seemed too small and fiddly or too big and clumsy. I didn’t think it would ever happen, not in a million years, but the spell I was under had finally worn off, I no longer felt the impulse to make a mosaic.
However, I still love to look at them, and will always have complete respect for those who make them and will always appreciate ancient and modern architectural mosaics around the world. I can’t wait to see the Sacrada Familia once again when it’s complete!
So what now?
Well, I’ve fallen in love with printmaking. I always loved woodcuts and lino prints and so decided to make some of my own. I also make collages and pen and ink drawings, make my own paper and my own inks. And I walk and sketch on Dartmoor as much as possible near where I live.
I’ll be taking part in Devon Open Studios this year, (at Ullacombe farm, near Haytor) and I’m excited to tell you that I won one of the emerging artists awards with DOS as well as the Joanna Radford prize ( a cash prize to help me purchase new tools and materials)
