There seem to be many ways to spell this Islamic method of making tiles, but perhaps it is correctly spelt zillij. Having researched it a bit more, I was fascinated to find out that once the biscuit fired tiles are cut into shapes , glazed and put together as whole geometric tiles, it doesn’t end there!…
I collected another new piece of work from my framers yesterday. This is “Gathering Darkness”. It takes the idea from my Flocked series – How the Sky Becomes Blue and The Birds Who Bring the Dusk (see mosaics here) into the night. The final mosaic in my journey that makes up a concept album of work is complete. I started this mosaic 3 years ago for a BAMM exhibition “ Music of the Eye”, but I wasn’t able to give enough time to complete it then. And I don’t think the time was right for it anyway….
