Topps Tiles Award for Achievement in Mosaic
Every year Topps Tiles runs 2 competitions in conjunction with BAMM (British Association for Modern Mosaic). One is a schools mosaic competition and the other is an adult mosaic classes competition. This year I decided to submit some of my students work for the adult classes competition. I submitted 15 works selected from three of my courses. The work has to be the students first mosaic.
We were delighted when we were told that my student Tessa had won an award, which was a cheque for £100, and I had won £300 in Topps Tiles vouchers to purchase more coursework materials.
Tessa’s mosaic called “Riverbed” is beautiful (see below). It will be entered for the next part of the competition which will be judged for the best student mosaic from all the winners around the country. The top student will win a £500 commission prize.
What was also special about the competition was that the judge, ( art teacher, David Tuhill) wrote a comment about each mosaic).
This is what he said about Tessa’s mosaic:
TESSA HYDE: “Riverbed” This is a beautiful piece of work that really evokes the
feeling of water moving through the reeds and over pebbles on the riverbed. The
lovely tones and shapes of green interspersed with glittering pieces looks wonderful
as do the glittering blues on the sandy coloured river bed. The tiny circular flowerlike
items pulled my eye around this excellent mosaic. Well done Tessa you are the award
winner.
I couldn’t have put it better myself. Well done Tessa!
